As research grows more advanced and more varied, automating entire experimental processes is becoming increasingly important. But instruments differ in specifications and communication methods, and flexibly automating experiments that combine several of them is far from simple.

Efficient, reproducible research needs a way to bring multiple instruments together and to rearrange procedures and control as the research changes. embrio is the systems integrator that takes on that integration.

Recently AI has advanced quickly at generating hypotheses and interpreting results, and the automation of research is becoming a reality. In fields like the life sciences and materials science, where experiments in the physical world are essential, a layer that connects AI to the actual lab is needed. embrio works on building that connecting foundation.

Our Strengths

Rather than automating instruments one by one, embrio brings several instruments together and designs them as a single system. The following strengths are what make that possible.

Bringing many instruments together into one system, whatever the maker or standard

The hard part of lab automation is bringing together instruments, steps, and data processes whose makers and standards are all different. Even when connection methods such as LAN, USB, and serial, and control standards such as SiLA 2, OPC UA, Modbus, and proprietary SDKs are mixed together, we absorb the differences between instruments and bring them onto a common platform. We design so that the whole procedure runs as a single system, covering the order in which instruments act, state management, branching, exception handling, and the hand-off of data.

Automation that uses the instruments you already have

Rather than assuming a switch to new instruments, we automate using what is already there. From standard commercial instruments to customized ones and lab-built equipment, we bring them together, including API work and driver development where needed.

Automation researchers can run themselves

We keep the system's specifications and configuration open to our customers and avoid tying them to a particular vendor. After delivery, researchers can change conditions and add steps and keep the automation running on their own.

From image analysis and data processing to GUIs

Beyond controlling instruments, we also develop image analysis models, handle the display and correction of data, and build GUIs. We design systems that are genuinely usable on site, covering judgment and recording as well as operation.

Building a foundation that works well with generative AI

We are not only well versed in generative AI; we design the coordination platform itself to work well with it. By hiding the differences between instruments behind a uniform interface, and exposing an experiment's progress, state, and results in a structured form, the platform becomes a base on which an AI can read the situation, decide the next move, and drive the instruments safely.

We develop the hardware ourselves

We develop our own hardware, such as the OpenScope microscope and the OpenHandler transfer unit. Rather than only calling an external device's API, we can design and build with the instrument's own constraints and handling in mind.
